Defending against common attacks
Held in December 2008
Topics - Glassing, bear hugs, hand grabs, shirt grabs, tackles, bear hugs and more
In this workshop you will learn how to defend yourself against attacks which have been common here in Sydney.
One of the most common scenarios by far in civilian violence is the escalating scenario.
Guys - When someone approaches you with the intent of attacking you, in many situation it is much more common for them to push you, grab you or your clothing before it escalates into a full blown attack (sometimes even just as they are coming to attack). In scenarios where there is more then one attacker, it is common for one of them to try to hold you or take you to the ground.
Girls (rape prevention) - It is common for the attacker to grab or hold the person or clothing in order to drag them somewhere or take them down to the ground.
It is true that someone may come out of nowhere and throw a punch at you, but it is far more common for the situation to escalate into an attack. In these cases it is essential to neutralize the threat as soon as possible before it escalates. Also when you are being grabbed the dynamics are quite different from attacks which we normally imagine.
We will also cover in this workshop, how to defend against glassings which, unfortunately, have become extremely common here in Australia.
This workshop is open to the general public, 16 years and older.
